About This Course
This course designed to be an introduction to the compositional classification of fine-grained sediments and sedimentary rocks and provides a foundation for bulk rock property prediction. The course begins with an overview of the basic components of sedimentary rocks that covers the terminology and particulate characteristics to consider when classifying fine-grained sedimentary rocks. It then focuses on grain assemblages in mudrocks and possible ways to classify fine-grained sedimentary rocks using a refined classification scheme specifically for mudrocks. The course finishes with sections on understanding diagenesis of fine-grained sedimentary rocks and how diagenetic processes impact rock property prediction.
Course Objectives
Students are expected to learn the following when they take this course:
- Basic components of particulate sedimentary rocks
- How to characterize primary and secondary components in mudrocks
- Extrabasinal and intrabasinal grain assemblages in fine-grained sediments
- Terminology and characteristics to consider when classifying fine-grained sedimentary rocks
- A classification scheme refined for mudrocks that incorporates diagenetic processes
Course Format
This is an asynchronous short-course that contains videos, resources for learning more, and a set of questions in each section to help facilitate learning. An asynchronous course is a course that can be done on your own time. Feel free to pause, take a break, and come back to your saved progress to continue with the course. There is no deadline for completion of this course.

Obtaining Continuing Education Units
