About This Course
This course provides insight into the professional and technical writing skills that are needed by geoscience students pursuing careers in state government agencies. Speakers will discuss skills that are developed during students’ undergraduate and graduate academic training, types of written products that are developed by geoscientists in state agencies, training and professional development opportunities for improving and expanding writing skills, and advice for students on how to acquire the needed writing skills as they prepare for and pursue their career path.
The course presenters are Steve Holbrook, Professor and Head of the Department of Geosciences, Virginia Tech, and David Spears, State Geologist, Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy.
Course Objectives
Students are expected to learn the following when they take this course:
- The types of technical and non-technical writing needed for state government jobs
- Techniques for improving one's writing skills
Course Format
This is an asynchronous short-course that contains videos, resources for learning more, and a set of questions in each section to help facilitate learning. An asynchronous course is a course that can be done on your own time. Feel free to pause, take a break, and come back to your saved progress to continue with the course. There is no deadline for completion of this course.

Obtaining Continuing Education Units
If your course grade is at least 70%, you may apply for 0.10 CEU credit. There is an administrative fee for the issuance of the CEU, and you can view the fee structure here. You can check your final grade by clicking on the Progress menu item in the course navigation menu at the top of the page.
